FG INTRODUCES DUAL MANDATE SYSTEM FOR COLLEGES OF EDUCATION
The Federal Government has announced reforms allowing students in colleges of education to earn both NCE and B.Ed degrees. The move is aimed at improving teacher training and boosting enrolment.
Legitdan news report that the Federal Government has announced major reforms in Nigeria colleges of education through the introduction of a dual mandate system that allows students to graduate with both Nigeria Certificate in Education and Bachelor of Education degrees.
According to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, twenty eight federal colleges are already operating the system, while about seventeen to eighteen state owned colleges are expected to adopt it after completing necessary legal adjustments.
Under the programme, students will spend three years to obtain the Nigeria Certificate in Education and may continue for two additional years to earn a Bachelor of Education degree if they meet university entry requirements.
The minister explained that the reform is designed to strengthen teacher training, improve enrolment, and make colleges of education more attractive to applicants, especially as many institutions previously recorded low first choice applications.
He also noted that removing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination requirements for some institutions and widening access through policy changes could significantly increase admissions into tertiary institutions nationwide.
