UUTH HEALTH WORKERS BEGIN INDEFINITE STRIKE AFTER EFCC RAID

Medical doctors and health workers at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital have commenced an indefinite strike following an EFCC operation at the facility. The action has disrupted hospital services.

Legitdan news report that medical doctors and other health workers at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital have started an indefinite strike after operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission reportedly stormed the hospital to arrest a staff member.

During the incident, Professor Effiong Ekpe, a cardiothoracic surgeon and Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, alongside three other staff members, was taken away by the operatives.

Health workers alleged that shots were fired into the air and tear gas was used during the operation, leaving some persons injured and causing panic within the hospital environment.

The Nigerian Medical Association in Akwa Ibom described the operation as inhumane and protested the treatment of medical personnel, leading to the shutdown of services at the hospital.

However, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command stated that the arrest was lawful and carried out based on a valid court order. The command added that the hospital management had been informed before the operation.
