UNILORIN VC CALLS FOR STRONGER REGIONAL SECURITY STRATEGIES
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin has called for improved diplomatic and security measures to tackle instability in West and Central Africa. He spoke during a strategic intelligence course in Abuja.
Legitdan news report that the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole, has called for stronger diplomatic, security, and economic strategies to address rising instability across West and Central Africa.
Speaking at the Strategic Intelligence Management Course in Abuja, he warned that the growing wave of coups in neighbouring countries poses a direct security threat to Nigeria, with possible spill over effects along border communities.
Professor Egbewole proposed measures including the appointment of special neighbourhood policy envoys, the creation of a Nigeria Neighbourhood Security Council, the strengthening of ECOWAS security structures, and improved intelligence sharing systems.
He also recommended deeper regional cooperation through economic frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area and the establishment of development funds to tackle insecurity from its root causes.
According to him, Nigeria must move beyond distant multilateral engagement and adopt a more coordinated, intelligence driven, and direct approach to regional relations in order to safeguard national security and stability.
