Legitdan news report that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has clarified that female candidates are not required to remove their hijabs during the 2026 UTME registration or examination process.
The Board issued the clarification following viral reports that some candidates were allegedly pressured at certain registration centres to remove their religious coverings. JAMB stated clearly that it has no policy prohibiting religious attire, stressing its commitment to respecting candidates’ beliefs.
According to JAMB’s official biometric guidelines, candidates are only required to ensure both ears are visible during biometric photo capture. This requirement, the Board explained, is a global technical standard used for facial recognition systems similar to those used for international passports and visas, and does not require full removal of the hijab.
The examination body also confirmed that officials who acted against these guidelines by harassing candidates have been sanctioned, reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct.
Meanwhile, JAMB reminded candidates that registration for the 2026 UTME is ongoing and will close on February 28, 2026, urging all prospective applicants to complete their registration early to avoid last-minute issues.
Candidates experiencing biometric capture problems are advised to visit accredited CBT centres or JAMB state offices for proper assistance.
