EDUCATION EXPERT CALLS FOR REVIEW OF 16 YEAR UNIVERSITY ADMISSION AGE POLICY

Ebenezer Mbamalu has urged the government to reconsider the 16 year minimum age requirement for university admission. He said the policy may unfairly affect brilliant students who start school early.

Legitdan news report that education expert and founder of Meclones Group Ebenezer Mbamalu has appealed to the government to review the policy that sets 16 years as the minimum age for university admission.

The rule is enforced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and has been confirmed by its Registrar Is-haq Oloyede. Mbamalu said the policy may negatively affect brilliant students who started school early and are academically ready for higher education but are required to wait because of their age.

Speaking with The Nation, he described the policy as too strict and warned that keeping qualified students out of school could leave them idle or frustrated. He advised JAMB and tertiary institutions to consider flexible options that would support such students.

Mbamalu also commended the administration of Bola Tinubu for reforms in the education sector, including the student loan scheme managed by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and the renewed agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities aimed at strengthening universities.

He further stressed the need to address the rising number of out of school children in Nigeria, noting that national development depends on sustained investment in education.
