LABOUR UNIONS DECLARES NATIONWIDE STRIKE OVER MINIMUM WAGE AND ELECTRICITY TARIFF HIKE

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide strike starting from Monday, June 3rd, 2024. The strike is in response to the government’s failure to agree on a new minimum wage and reverse the hike in electricity tariff.

The labour unions had given the government an ultimatum to conclude negotiations for a new minimum wage by the end of May, but this was not met. They are demanding a minimum wage of N497,000, while the government has offered N60,000.

The strike is a result of the government’s inability to address the rising cost of living in Nigeria, following the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira. Labour leaders have proposed measures to cushion the impact, including a new minimum wage and alternative modes of transportation.

The Federal Government has yet to comment on the strike action, which is set to begin on June 3rd.
