LASUED DVC CALLS FOR REVIEW OF ARABIC STUDIES CURRICULUM

A LASUED Deputy Vice Chancellor has urged a review of the Arabic Studies curriculum. He said reforms are needed to align with modern realities.

Legitdan news report that Morufudeen Shittu, Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration of Lagos State University of Education, has called for an overhaul of the Arabic Studies curriculum in Nigeria.

He made the call while delivering the second inaugural lecture of the university titled Synthesizing Convention and Modernity for a Prosperous Future My Intellectual Footprint to Reinvigorate Arabic Studies in Nigeria.

According to him, the lecture reflects his 27 years of academic experience in Arabic Language Education and highlights the need to align the curriculum with present day realities.

He explained that revitalizing Arabic Studies goes beyond academic reform and represents a strategic contribution to national and global development.

He noted that Arabic is spoken by over 300 million people across more than 26 countries and is one of the official languages of the United Nations. He also described it as the liturgical language of Islam and the language of the Quran, with relevance in modern digital technologies.

The professor stated that Arabic education in Nigeria has a long history, noting that by 1914, over 30000 Quranic schools existed across the country and the language became integrated into the educational system despite colonial challenges.

He added that major centres of Arabic scholarship developed in places such as Ilorin, Ibadan, and Epe, contributing to the evolution of structured Arabic colleges.

Shittu further explained that tertiary level Arabic Studies in Nigeria began with certificate and diploma programmes at University of Ibadan before expanding into full degree programmes.

He concluded that the future of Arabic Studies depends on combining traditional scholarship with modern educational frameworks to support national development.
