UNILAG Revives Students’ Union After 10 Years, Inaugurates Renaissance Administration

Legitdan News reports that University of Lagos has officially revived its Students’ Union after a 10 year suspension, with the inauguration of new student leaders.

The Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunmola, presided over the swearing-in ceremony held on March 24, 2026, marking a major step in restoring student unionism in the institution.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Johnson Agunsoye, described the event as a key milestone. He explained that the inauguration serves as the foundation for a fully structured Students’ Union Government expected in the 2026/2027 academic session.

To support the new administration, the University approved:

• ₦5 million take-off grant

• Temporary office space

• Refurbishment of an 18-seater bus for union activities

The Vice-Chancellor urged the student leaders to focus on responsible leadership, unity and service to the University community. She recalled that the union was suspended in 2016 due to violent protests and disruption on campus.

The Divisional Police Officer of Sabo Police Station, CSP Comfort Alabi, also advised the executives to promote peace, discipline and avoid activities that could affect their academic progress.

[ez-toc]The newly inaugurated ULSU President, Bolaji Akinpelu, described the administration as the “Renaissance Administration,” promising purposeful and responsive leadership.

The ceremony featured the administration of oath of office and presentation of the staff of office to the new president.
