WAEC SHIFTS FULL COMPUTER BASED TESTING TO 2027
The West African Examinations Council has postponed the complete switch to computer based testing for the Senior School Certificate Examinations. The new target year is 2027. The council had previously set 2026 as the deadline.
The Chairman of the Nigeria National Committee of WAEC, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, announced this at the opening of the 63rd Annual Meeting in Umuahia. She stated that the 2026 May or June WASSCE will operate as a pilot phase. Candidates will choose between CBT or the paper and pen format.
She noted concerns raised by schools and other stakeholders about the earlier date. She also assured that no student taking the 2026 examination will face any disadvantage. WAEC has started training students on the use of tablets and digital responses.
WAEC confirmed that science students are still allowed to take Economics as an elective subject. The council also extended the time for uploading Continuous Assessment Scores to support candidates taking newly introduced subjects approved for WASSCE 2026.
The council celebrated top performers from the 2024 examination. Master Ajisafe Qoreebullah Olamilekan from Eemaan Foundation College in Osogbo was named the best overall candidate. Visually impaired candidates and other category winners were also recognised.
The shift aligns with the Federal Government’s plan to move all public examinations to full computer based testing, as announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa.
