NUC WARNS UNIVERSITIES OVER EXCESSIVE HONORARY DOCTORATE AWARDS
The National Universities Commission has introduced a 16 point guideline regulating the award and usage of honorary degrees, warning that violators will face sanctions.
Legitdan news report that the National Universities Commission has directed Nigerian universities to stop the indiscriminate and excessive award of honorary doctorate degrees.
In a recent statement, the Commission released a 16 point guideline to regulate the conferment and usage of honorary degrees. It stressed that honorary doctorates are ceremonial recognitions and must not be presented or used as equivalent to academic doctorates earned through formal study, research and examination.
The policy is backed by existing national education laws and the 2012 Keffi Declaration signed by vice chancellors across the country. According to the Commission, the directive is aimed at protecting the integrity, credibility and global reputation of Nigerian universities.
Universities have been instructed to strictly comply with the new framework or face regulatory sanctions. The Commission noted that both institutions and individuals who violate the rules will be held accountable.
