NUC ISSUES STRICT GUIDELINES ON HONORARY DOCTORATE DEGREES IN NIGERIA
The National Universities Commission has directed universities to comply with new rules regulating honorary doctorate awards to safeguard academic integrity.
Legitdan news report that the National Universities Commission has issued official Guidelines regulating the award and use of Honorary Doctorate Degrees in Nigeria, pursuant to provisions of the Education Act CAP E3 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The Commission said the action follows rising concerns about the indiscriminate conferment and misuse of honorary degrees within the Nigerian University System. The new Guidelines are designed to protect academic integrity, maintain institutional credibility and uphold the global reputation of Nigerian universities, in line with the principles of the 2012 Keffi Declaration.
According to the directive, all universities and degree awarding institutions must strictly comply with the approved provisions. The Commission emphasized that honorary doctorate degrees, whether obtained locally or internationally, remain ceremonial recognitions and must not be presented as equivalent to earned academic doctorates.
The regulatory body warned that appropriate sanctions will be imposed on institutions or individuals found violating the new rules, reinforcing its commitment to preserving standards across higher education institutions in Nigeria.
