ASUU THREATENS FRESH STRIKE IF FG FAILS TO SIGN AGREEMENT, SETS NEW DEADLINE TO SHUTDOWN VARSITIES

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Ibadan (UI) and the Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUE), Oyo, has warned that if the renegotiated agreement is not signed during its meeting with the federal government team on August 28, 2025, another nationwide strike in Nigeria’s public universities may be inevitable.

The lecturers under the Union, on Tuesday, staged a peaceful protest over the federal government’s delay in signing the long-awaited renegotiated agreement, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, to sensitise students and staff within their campuses about the looming crisis.

President Bola Tinubu was accused of neglecting promises made during his campaign.

Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, Chairman of the UI ASUU Chapter, stressed that the federal government has “pushed lecturers to the wall” and urged Nigerians to pressure the government into honouring its commitment.

Similarly, Dr. Michael Bamidele Ojo, ASUU Chairman at EAUE, Oyo, said the union would no longer tolerate delays that jeopardise members’ welfare.

The protest also had the backing of the Oyo State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Kayode Martins, who appealed to President Tinubu to “preserve those who lay the golden eggs” by immediately signing and implementing the agreement.
