COURT ORDERS OAU TO RESTORE GRADUATE RESULT
A Federal High Court has ordered Obafemi Awolowo University to correct the academic record of a graduate. The court also awarded damages and legal costs.
Legitdan news report that the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has ordered Obafemi Awolowo University to correct the academic record of a Physiotherapy graduate, Shekoni Jemima Oluwagbemisola.
The graduate completed her Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation degree in 2023. She stated that the university initially classified her result as Pass with Credit in November 2023 and reflected the same classification during the 47th convocation ceremony.
She later discovered that the result had been changed to Pass when she applied for her certificate. After unsuccessful efforts to resolve the matter internally, she approached the court.
Delivering judgment, Justice Adefunmilola Demi Ajayi described the university action as arbitrary and reckless. The court held that the decision violated proper academic and administrative procedures as well as the applicant fundamental rights.
The court noted that the unexplained alteration caused emotional distress and negatively affected her academic and career progression. It ordered the university to issue her certificate with the original Pass with Credit classification in line with Senate approval.
The court also awarded 5 million naira in damages and 800000 naira as legal costs.
