The Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) successfully held its Orientation Programme for fresh students of the 2024/2025 academic session at the prestigious Rooftop Auditorium from Thursday, 27th March, to Friday, 28th March 2025.
The two-day event aimed to familiarize new students with the university’s academic and social environment while equipping them with essential knowledge for a smooth transition into university life.
The programme commenced with a brief address by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dimie Ogoina, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius Ebi Ligha. The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Godwin Angaye, represented by the Sub-Dean, Dr. Seth Tolumoye, delivered a warm welcome address. Additionally, the Registrar of the University, Dr. Mrs. Felicia E. Akusu, gave a goodwill remark, setting the tone for an informative and engaging orientation.
DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS
The first day of the programme featured insightful presentations, including:
- Students’ Clearance and Registration Processes in BMU – Delivered by Miss Sarah Luke Ugaile, Admissions Officer. This session provided students with a step-by-step guide on the clearance and registration process at BMU, highlighting the necessary documents, deadlines, and procedures to ensure a seamless transition into academic life. Miss Ugaile emphasized the importance of early registration and proper documentation to avoid unnecessary delays.
- Course Enrolment: What It Is, Processes Involved, and Regulations – Presented by Dr. Timipa Ogoun, Former Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and Current Provost, College of Health Technology, Otuogidi. Dr. Ogoun elaborated on the course enrolment process, explaining how students can register for courses, the credit system, and the implications of dropping or adding courses. He encouraged students to seek academic guidance when selecting their courses to align with their career goals.
- Academic Regulations and Course Credit System: Implications for Successful Studentship in BMU – Delivered by the Director, Academic Planning, Research and Innovation, Dr. Mrs. Chidima Daukoru-Olukole. This session focused on BMU’s academic policies, grading system, and the importance of adhering to the university’s regulations to maintain good academic standing. Dr. Daukoru-Olukole emphasized the need for discipline, time management, hard work and consistency in studies.
- Effective Utilisation of Library Resources for Academic Advancement – Presented by the University Librarian, Dr. Abraham Etebu, represented by Senior Assistant Librarian, Mr. Sunday Godwin. The presentation outlined the wealth of academic resources available in the university’s library, including books, digital databases, journals, and reference materials. Mr. Sunday encouraged students to familiarize themselves with the library services to enhance their research and learning experience.
- Sexual Harassment, Pregnancy, Conception, and Abortion among University Students – Delivered by the Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Mrs. Gift Timighe. This critical session addressed issues of sexual harassment, reproductive health, and the consequences of unplanned pregnancies among university students. Dr. Timighe provided guidance on making informed choices and encouraged students to seek counseling and support services available at BMU.
The first day concluded with an interactive Question and Answer session, allowing students to seek clarifications and engage with university officials.
The second day of the orientation featured six key presentations:
- Students’ Unionism and Leadership Development at BMU – Presented by Dr. Isoun Seth Tolumoye, Sub-Dean, Student Affairs. This session emphasized the role of student unionism in advocating for students’ rights and fostering leadership skills. Dr. Tolumoye highlighted the importance of active student participation in governance, responsibility, and integrity in leadership roles.
- The Use of ICT in BMU – Delivered by Mr. Weldon Alazigha, Director, ICT, represented by Mr. Tebepah Ebipou. The presentation covered the various digital platforms available at BMU, including the university’s ICT Department, the CBT Centre, learning management system, student portals, internet services and online communication tools. Students were encouraged to leverage technology for academic success and stay updated with university announcements through digital channels.
- Dress Code for Males and Females in BMU – Presented by Dr. Isoun Seth Tolumoye, Sub- lDean, Student Affairs. This session outlined the university’s dress code policy, emphasizing the importance of dressing decently and professionally. Dr. Tolumoye explained the consequences of violating the dress code and encouraged students to maintain a respectable appearance at all times.
- Living in BMU (Part 1 & Part 2) – Presented by Mrs. Timipre Amabie, Female Hall Warden, and Dr. Ekakite Omamoke, Male Hall Warden. These presentations provided students with insights into campus accommodation, hostel rules, and community living. The wardens discussed strategies for maintaining a clean and conducive living environment, fostering good relationships among roommates, and adhering to the university’s residential policies.
- Safety, Security, and Anti-Social Behaviour on Campus – Delivered by the Chief Security Officer, Mr. Richman Perekimi Famous. The presentation focused on security measures at BMU, crime prevention strategies, and the importance of reporting suspicious activities. Mr. Famous advised students on personal safety, emergency response procedures, and the dangers of engaging in anti-social behaviors.
- The Role of the Institute of Foreign Languages and Biomedical Translation – Presented by Dr. Napoleon Bodi, Director, Institute of Foreign Languages and Biomedical Translation. Dr. Bodi explained the significance of foreign language proficiency and its application in the biomedical field. He introduced students to the institute’s programs, emphasizing the benefits of bilingual communication skills in global medical and research collaborations.
The event concluded with refreshments for students and staff, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all participants.
Under the Leadership of Prof. Dimie Ogoina, BMU remains committed to nurturing academic excellence, professional growth, and student welfare. The successful orientation is in furtherance of the ASPIRE Agenda fulfilling academic excellence for the fresh students, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and guidance to thrive within the BMU community.
