ASUU leaders are meeting in Abuja today to decide the next steps in their standoff with the Federal Government.
Legitdan News reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities has convened an emergency meeting in Abuja as tension rises over a possible nationwide strike. The session is taking place today at the Festus Iyayi Building, University of Abuja, with branch chairpersons already in the Federal Capital Territory.
A senior member of the union’s NEC confirmed that the leaders will review the ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government and assess the latest proposals before deciding the union’s next action. ASUU has maintained its stand on the full implementation of the Nimi Briggs Committee report.
The union has repeatedly warned about a full strike over unresolved issues including the 2009 ASUU–FG agreement review, payment of owed salaries, earned allowances and release of the university revitalisation fund.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who is currently out of the country, insists the government has met the key demands. He noted that the President has directed that university activities should not be disrupted and assured that efforts to stabilise campuses are ongoing.
