JoSTUM Shut Down After Students Protest Over NELFUND Disbursement Issues
Legitdan News reports that Joseph Saroyan Tarka University has been shut down following a student protest over the disbursement of Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
The closure was announced in an internal memo dated March 23 and signed by the Registrar, John David. The institution declared an immediate Easter break from March 23 to April 7 and directed all students to vacate hostels by 6 p.m. on the same day.
The decision came hours after students staged a protest on campus, blocking the main gate and demanding clarity on NELFUND payments. Protesters carried placards and called for transparency, with concerns over non-payment and partial disbursement of approved funds.
Some students alleged that although their loans were approved, they had not received payments. Others claimed they received less than expected, raising questions about how funds were handled.
In response, the university management stated that most eligible students had received their funds, adding that only 76 students were yet to benefit due to incomplete registration.
The Registrar explained that the loan operates on a reimbursement system based on fees already paid by students. He noted that students would only receive refunds equivalent to the amount they had paid.
The student union leadership urged calm and advised protesters to remain peaceful while discussions continue.
The university warned that disruptions could affect academic activities, especially with examinations approaching.
