UNIBEN OPTOMETRY ADMISSION CRISIS LEAVES STUDENTS UNCERTAIN AS PARENTS RAISE ALARM
Legitdan News reports that a parent has raised serious concerns over the admission process into the Doctor of Optometry programme at the University of Benin for the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to the parent, UNIBEN admitted about 350 students into the Optometry programme. The students received admission letters from both the university and JAMB, paid acceptance fees, resumed in November, and began lectures as Optometry students.
Legitdan News reports that four months into the session, the university reportedly informed students and parents that it can only retain 150 students due to quota and accreditation limits. The remaining students are expected to be transferred to other courses.
The parent stated that many affected students are being denied clearance, while examinations are scheduled to begin in March. This situation has left several 100 level students confused about their academic status, as they are unsure of their department while lectures continue.
Legitdan News reports that the parent expressed deep concern, noting that the students followed due process and were admitted in good faith. Acceptance fees were paid based on official admission offers, and the students committed fully to the programme.
The parent accused the university of poor communication, lack of transparency, and failure to explain how the 150 students to be retained will be selected. The situation, according to the parent, is affecting the mental wellbeing and future plans of the students.
Legitdan News reports that the parent appealed for urgent intervention, stressing that the students should not suffer for what was described as an internal failure by the institution. The parent added that the issue is being handled quietly, with little public awareness.
