FUTA HOLDS ORIENTATION FOR FRESH OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING CENTRE STUDENTS
Legitdan News reports that the Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA has successfully conducted the third edition of its Virtual Orientation Programme for newly admitted students of the Open and Distance Learning Centre ODLC. The event was held on Monday, February 2, 2026, for students admitted into the E Learning Bachelor of Science Computer Science programme.
In his opening address titled Introduction to FUTA and ODLC Mission, Values and Culture, the Director of the Open and Distance Learning Centre, Professor Ilesanmi Alao, stated that the E Learning Computer Science programme is approved by the National Universities Commission and aligned with global best practices. He explained that the Open and Distance Learning initiative was introduced to meet the growing demand for university education and provide flexible access for candidates unable to enroll in regular full time programmes.
Professor Alao added that the programme is designed to deliver quality education through virtual classrooms and online resources, while equipping students with digital skills required for success in today’s fast growing world.
The Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, congratulated the newly admitted students and commended the ODLC team for their dedication. She charged students to maintain high academic performance and good moral conduct throughout their studies, stressing that ODLC students enjoy equal status with on campus students and must uphold the image of the university.
During the orientation, the Associate Director of ODLC, Dr. David Adewole, explained the centre’s policies, including code of conduct, attendance rules, and communication guidelines. He stated that admission into the programme allows O Level candidates to begin from Year One, while Direct Entry candidates start from Year Two, with no age restriction.
Dr. Adewole also noted that the programme adopts open educational resources which are freely accessible for teaching, learning, and research. He explained that students receive academic and non academic support from facilitators, e tutors, counselors, administrative staff, and technical support teams. Students are expected to be physically present on campus for four weeks at the end of each semester for practical activities.
He further emphasized that participation in learning activities is compulsory, with a minimum of seventy five percent attendance required to qualify for end of semester examinations. Attendance and engagement are monitored through digital systems.
Speaking on technology and software systems, ODLC Technical Lead, Dr. Akindeji Makinde, explained that students have access to an e library containing major journals, books, and e books. He added that the Learning Management System and Office 365 provide students with official university email addresses, granting access to premium digital and AI based tools.
Dr. Makinde stated that lectures will be delivered through both recorded and real time formats. Recorded lectures will be uploaded on the Learning Management System, while live sessions will be conducted via platforms such as Zoom and Telegram to allow direct interaction with facilitators and e tutors.
