JAMB SCRAPS SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR ALBINO UTME CANDIDATES
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has scrapped special considerations and registration procedures previously granted to candidates with albinism for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), citing abuse of the privilege to perpetrate examination malpractice.
The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Isaq Oloyede, made this known on Saturday at a meeting with Commissioners for Education from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, held in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to Oloyede, some candidates exploited artificial intelligence to manipulate the registration process and falsely present themselves as albino beneficiaries, noting that over 7,000 candidates made such claims last year.
The Board also cautioned faith-based tertiary institutions to clearly declare their religious status during admission, warning against presenting as secular and later imposing compulsory religious rules on students.
On examination malpractice, Oloyede disclosed that some undergraduates sit for the UTME to change courses or assist others, adding that the highest-scoring candidate in the last UTME was later discovered to be a 300-level university student.
He warned that any candidate who fails to disclose their current admission status or writes the examination for another person will be disqualified and will also forfeit their existing admission.
Oloyede further restated that admissions into federal institutions are based on 45 per cent merit, 20 per cent catchment area, 20 per cent educationally disadvantaged states, with the remaining slots allocated to other considerations.
