ASUU-KASU Disowns VC’s Strike Suspension, Insists Action Continues

A fresh twist has emerged in the ongoing industrial dispute at Kaduna State University (KASU) as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU branch, has dissociated itself from an announcement made by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa, regarding the suspension of the indefinite strike action.

In an official statement signed by the Acting Chairman, Comr. Abubakar Abdullahi, and the Secretary, Comr. Peter M. Waziri, the union described the Vice Chancellor’s announcement as a violation of ASUU’s principles. According to the union, the university management neither initiated the strike nor holds the authority to call it off.

“The purported suspension of the indefinite strike action in KASU as announced by the Vice Chancellor violates the principles of ASUU. The Management of the University did not call for the strike action and therefore cannot suspend it,” the statement reads in part.

The ASUU-KASU branch has urged the public to disregard the announcement made by the university management, emphasizing that the strike remains in force. It further disclosed that the branch is still awaiting directives from the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union, following resolutions from the Congress held earlier on May 15, 2025.

This development is likely to prolong the disruption of academic activities at KASU, as the standoff between the union and the university authorities continues. Students and parents have expressed concern over the uncertainty, calling on both parties to find a common ground in the interest of education.

The strike action, which began weeks ago, is part of a broader agitation by academic staff over issues ranging from poor funding, welfare demands, to alleged high-handedness by university management.

As at press time, there has been no official response from the university management regarding ASUU-KASU’s latest position.
