WAEC Blames Logistics, Security for Late-Night English Exam

Lagos – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has given reasons for the unusual delay in the conduct of the English Language paper of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which saw candidates writing late into the night on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

In an official statement issued on Thursday, the examination body attributed the disruption to logistical difficulties and heightened security concerns in some centres across the country.

According to the Council’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, the delay was an unfortunate outcome of stringent efforts put in place to curb examination malpractice, particularly the leakage of question papers.

“WAEC remains committed to the integrity of the examination process. While there were no reported cases of paper leakage during the English Language paper, we encountered some logistical and security-related setbacks that affected the smooth delivery of materials in certain areas,” Adeshina said.

The Council assured that it is working hand-in-hand with relevant security agencies to forestall a recurrence in subsequent papers.

“We deeply regret the inconvenience this incident may have caused our candidates, their schools, and parents. Measures are already being strengthened to avoid a repeat of such occurrences,” the statement added.

Several social media posts had earlier in the day shown pictures of students seen leaving examination halls late in the night, sparking widespread concern among Nigerians.

WAEC further reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a fair, credible, and malpractice-free examination, promising improved logistics for the remainder of the WASSCE calendar.
