The management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is calling for power-saving measures after the institution’s monthly electricity bill surged from ₦70 million to ₦230 million.
n a memo released on June 10, 2024, the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) management addressed the substantial increase in electricity bills from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), which have escalated from ₦70 million to ₦230 million monthly. The memo emphasizes the need for the university community to adopt energy-saving practices to manage these rising costs effectively.
The memo reads:
“As we continue to navigate the challenges of rising electricity costs, we must collaborate to reduce the energy consumption rate. The recent increases in electricity bills from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) have made it imperative for us to be more mindful of our energy usage.
In light of the above, we urge all members of the University Community to be more conscious of energy consumption habits. Simple actions such as the following can make a significant impact:
- Turning off lights, computers, and other appliances when not in use
- Using energy-efficient light bulbs
- Avoiding unnecessary use of electrical devices
In view of the foregoing, therefore, it is kindly required that all departments and units are to:
- Implement energy-saving measures
- Identify areas for improvement
Members of the University Community are hereby requested to work with good understanding to reduce our energy footprint and mitigate the financial burden of rising electricity costs on the University. By extension, the Management has resolved to schedule the supply of electricity to the University Community as per this timetable:
The Directorates of Works Department and Security are requested to switch on the security and street lights at 6.30 p.m. and switch off at 6.00 a.m. every day.
Due compliance with this request is highly appreciated.
In addition, hostel managers, hostel owners, and the Student Affairs Unit are also requested to ensure compliance with this directive.
