UNIBEN Suspends Academic Activities Indefinitely Over Protest, Orders Students to Vacate Hostels

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has indefinitely suspended academic activities following a widespread protest by students demanding 24-hour electricity supply and more academic activities in their hostels. In response to the incident, the university released a statement on Thursday. The statement announced the indefinite suspension of academic activities and ordered students to vacate the hostels immediately.

According to reports, The protest, which saw students taking to the streets in demonstration, caused widespread disruption to transportation and normal activities within the institution.

In response to the incident, the university released a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, on Thursday. The statement announced the indefinite suspension of academic activities and ordered students to vacate the hostels immediately.

The statement read, “Following the insistence of students of the University of Benin to shift grounds on their demands for twenty-four hours supply of electricity and more, considered unrealistic by the University’s Senate, the University has shut down academic activities indefinitely. Students are to vacate the hostels immediately while all the relevant units of the University are to take note and comply.”

Despite the suspension of academic activities, the university clarified that non-teaching staff and those on essential duties are not affected by the shutdown.
