Strike: Federal Government and ASUU to Resume Talks on September 6
Abuja, August 24, 2024 — The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have agreed to resume negotiations on September 6 to address unresolved issues concerning the demands made by university lecturers.
This decision follows a closed-door meeting between the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, and the ASUU leadership, led by its President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.
ASUU had earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government, urging it to address lingering issues that have hampered the development of Nigerian universities. The ultimatum was announced by Prof. Osodeke during a news conference at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State.
After the meeting, Prof. Mamman expressed optimism that the talks would prevent any further disruptions to academic activities. He stated that sub-committees have been established to examine the issues and report their findings by next week.
“Hopefully, we have a very good window for the resolution of the issues. So, the task before us now is to work on those modalities and the processes and procedures we all agreed to study the problems,” Mamman said. He added that the parties would reconvene on September 6 to review the progress made.
Prof. Osodeke also expressed hope that the ongoing discussions would lead to a resolution before the next meeting. However, he noted that any further actions, including the possibility of a strike, would be determined by ASUU members based on the outcome of the talks.
Among the key issues raised by ASUU are the conclusion of the renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU Agreement based on the 2021 draft by the Nimi Briggs Committee, the release of withheld salaries from the 2022 strike, payment of unpaid salaries to staff on sabbatical and part-time appointments due to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), and funding for the revitalization of public universities.
Other concerns include the proliferation of universities by federal and state governments, the implementation of reports from visitation panels to universities, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) in place of IPPIS.
