FUTA Alumna Saidat Rasaq-Balogun Receives 2024 Distinguished Student Award from Southern  Illinois University

An alumna of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Saidat Rasaq-Balogun, has been honored with the 2024 Distinguished Student Award from Southern Illinois University (SIU) in the United States. Rasaq-Balogun, along with seven other recipients, was recognized for her exceptional contributions and impact on both the SIU campus and the broader community.

SIU President Dan Mahony praised the awardees, stating, “SIU is proud to have so many wonderfully accomplished students who are not only making a major impact on campus but also in the greater communities.”

Rasaq-Balogun, currently pursuing her PhD in environmental resource and policy at SIU, has distinguished herself as a teacher, researcher, and volunteer. Her significant contributions include serving as the Vice President of the SIU International Student Council and working with various organizations to support international and African students. She also provides temporary housing for international students facing challenges, demonstrating her commitment to inclusivity and community support.

The SIU System Board of Trustees, through its Students Advisory Committee for the SIU System (SACSS), selected Rasaq-Balogun for the award from a pool of applicants across the university system. She was chosen as one of the outstanding students, having previously earned a first-class degree in Meteorological and Climate Science from FUTA.
