FG to Launch NYSC-Equivalent Program for NCE Graduates

Ibadan, August 24, 2024 — The Federal Government is set to introduce a new training program akin to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for graduates of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Youth Development, Mr. Olawande Wisdom, during the opening ceremony of the BEMORE OYO 2024 Summer Bootcamp in Ibadan.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is designed to provide NCE graduates with structured post-graduation training and citizenship development similar to the NYSC program currently available to university graduates.

According to Mr. Wisdom, this new scheme aims to address the gap left by the absence of a national service program for NCE holders. “We have NYSC for those who finished from universities, but what of those who finished from NCE and others?” he remarked, underscoring the need for inclusive training opportunities that cater to all graduates.

The program will offer local training options, allowing participants to remain in their communities rather than traveling to other states. This approach is part of a broader effort by the ministry to enhance citizenship training and address social issues affecting Nigerian youth.

In addition to the announcement, Mr. Wisdom praised the BEMORE Empowered Girls Foundation, founded by Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, for its work in developing young girls, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu emphasized the importance of including women and girls in development efforts, noting that her initiative is aimed at nurturing future female leaders in STEM fields.

Also present at the event, Mr. Abdulrahman Yinusa, Group Managing Director and CEO of Odu’a Investments, encouraged the youth to take full advantage of the training opportunities provided. He commended the organizers for their dedication to advancing technological education for girls.

The event concluded with a CPR training session conducted by the Red Cross Society, followed by the launch of a book titled The History of BEMORE, A Historical Voyage by Esther Michael
