ASUU BEGINS INDEFINITE STRIKE IN NIGERIA VARSITY

On Wednesday, September 11, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced an indefinite strike at Gombe State University (GSU), citing unresolved welfare concerns as the primary reason for the action.

Suleiman Salihu, the chairman of ASUU’s GSU branch, revealed during a press briefing that the strike was prompted by ongoing issues with teaching and learning conditions at the university.

Despite repeated efforts to address these concerns through various channels, the state government has yet to provide satisfactory resolutions.

Salihu highlighted that GSU has failed to implement the approved N30,000 minimum wage, leaving staff with salaries based on an outdated 2012 table

Additionally, he pointed out that the government has not honored the 2021 Memorandum of Action (MoA), which included provisions for an annual N50 million allocation to the university.

“The non-implementation of the 2021 MoA, the failure to increase university funding, and the non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) are critical issues,” Salihu stated. He also emphasized that the EAA, which has not been paid for over five years, has significantly hindered the ability of GSU staff to perform their duties effectively.

The strike aims to compel the state government to address these longstanding issues and improve the overall working conditions and support for the university staff.
