Federal Ministry of Education Launches N4 Billion Scholarship Fund to Revitalize Teaching Profession

The Ministry of Education announces a N4 billion Scholarship Fund aimed at revitalizing the teaching profession.
In a significant effort to boost interest in education-related courses and careers, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Yusuf Sununu, has introduced a special scholarship program. This initiative will provide over N4 billion in scholarships for students pursuing National Certificates of Education and other education-related degrees at tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Dr. Sununu made this announcement during a meeting with UNESCO officials, including Abdourahmane Diallo, UNESCO Country Representative to Nigeria. The meeting focused on collaborative efforts and upcoming projects designed to enhance Nigeria’s educational landscape.

Dr. Sununu expressed deep appreciation to the UNESCO team for their crucial support of Nigeria’s educational initiatives. He emphasized the importance of such partnerships in achieving national educational objectives.
“UNESCO’s involvement is vital to our mission of delivering high-quality education that equips our youth with the character and skills needed for success both locally and internationally,” Dr. Sununu stated. He highlighted the necessity of data-driven planning, collection, and analysis of educational data to ensure effective resource allocation and address current challenges.
Abdourahmane Diallo provided updates on UNESCO’s ongoing and future projects in Nigeria, including a newly signed initiative to enhance teacher capacity. This five-year project, with a budget of €5 million, will run from 2024 to 2028 and benefit the Federal Ministry of Education and six states: Adamawa, Bayelsa, Enugu, Katsina, Oyo, and Plateau. Diallo called for the immediate appointment of a focal officer for the project’s implementation.
Diallo also mentioned other initiatives, such as a Japan-sponsored teacher development project and the “Better Education for Africa’s Rise” (BEAR) project, Phase III, which aims to improve TVET systems in West Africa. Kano has been selected for agriculture and post-harvest processing initiatives under this project.
An upcoming conference in Paris on June 17 will see global leaders, including representatives from Nigeria, assess progress and mobilize efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) – Quality Education. This conference aims to expedite progress in the education sector.
Dr. Sununu reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector through strategic partnerships and innovative projects. He announced the appointment of a focal point officer and the formation of a steering committee for the project.
