ASUU BACKS SSANU AND NASU OVER NATIONWIDE STRIKE

ASUU has expressed support for SSANU and NASU during their indefinite strike. The unions are demanding implementation of pending agreements and improved welfare.

Legitdan news report that the Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared support for the ongoing nationwide indefinite strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.

The non academic unions stated that the strike followed years of delay in finalising and implementing a new agreement with the Federal Government despite repeated warnings. They also cited concerns linked to the rejected IPPIS payment system.

ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, said excluding some unions while partially implementing ASUU agreements is unfair and could affect the stability of the university system. He stressed that all university unions should be treated equally.

He also raised concerns over delayed salary payments affecting lecturers and warned that ASUU members may withdraw services if salaries are not paid promptly.

Union leaders further criticised poor handling of agreements, irregular salary payments, and lack of commitment to the education sector, stating that the issues are affecting workers morale.

They added that they remain open to dialogue but want urgent action to prevent a wider crisis in Nigerian universities.
