UNILAG SEMINAR HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR DYSLEXIA PROTOCOLS

A seminar at the University of Lagos has called for standardized dyslexia management in schools. The study revealed gaps in teacher awareness and intervention practices.

Legitdan news report that the need for schools and education authorities to adopt clear and standardized protocols for the early identification and management of dyslexia was highlighted at the April seminar of the Distance Learning Institute, University of Lagos.

The seminar, held on April 28, 2026, featured a presentation by Professor Temitope Balogun of Osun State University. The presentation, titled Teachers Awareness of Dyslexia among Lower and Upper Basic School Students in Oyo State, was part of a TETFund sponsored research project.

The study surveyed 310 teachers across 16 schools and revealed gaps in awareness, identification, and management of dyslexia among educators.

Professor Balogun stated that the findings point to broader challenges affecting inclusive education and learning outcomes. She added that up to 20 percent of children in sub Saharan Africa may be affected by dyslexia.

She emphasized the importance of early detection and structured intervention to support affected learners and improve educational outcomes.
