With the conclusion of the 2024 JAMB UTME, some candidates are counting their gains, while others are counting their losses. Whichever category you fall in, it is important to know that a high JAMB score is not an automatic ticket to higher institutions neither does a low JAMB score automatically disqualify you for admission.
We have seen candidates with high JAMB scores who failed to secure admission into any institution and had to retake JAMB and we have equally seen candidates with low JAMB Scores (Less than 200) who gained admission without having to wait for another JAMB.
So basically, a low or high JAMB score is not the ultimate determinant of who gains and who doesn’t gain admission.
So at this point, what we expect all 2024 JAMB candidates to do is to ask the following critical questions?
- What was my school’s cut-off mark last year?
- What was the cut-off mark for my intended course of study?
- Do I need a change of course/institution?
- What’s the school’s Post-UTME Screening like?
- How Can I prepare adequately for my school’s Post-UTME Screening?
The answers to these critical questions will help you know what next step to take towards successfully securing admission this year.
After taking the 2024 JAMB UTME, candidates should take the following steps:
1. Wait for Results: The first step is to patiently wait for the results to be released. JAMB typically releases results a few weeks after the examination.
2. Check Results: Once the results are out, candidates should check their scores and see how they performed. This will determine their eligibility for admission into tertiary institutions.
3. Post-UTME Screening: Many universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria conduct post-UTME screenings for candidates who have met the JAMB cut-off mark. Candidates should keep an eye out for announcements from their chosen institutions regarding post-UTME screening dates and procedures.
4. Prepare for Post-UTME: Candidates should start preparing for post-UTME screenings by studying relevant materials, past questions, and practicing exam techniques. It’s essential to perform well in these screenings as they often contribute to the overall admission assessment.
5. Apply for Admission: After the post-UTME screenings, candidates can proceed to apply for admission into their chosen institutions. This may involve filling out admission forms, submitting required documents, and paying necessary fees.

8. Prepare for Academic Session: Finally, candidates should prepare for the academic session by getting necessary supplies, familiarizing themselves with the institution’s policies and procedures, and taking care of any other preparations needed before resuming studies.
By following these steps, candidates can navigate the post-JAMB UTME process smoothly and increase their chances of securing admission into their desired tertiary institutions.
NOTE
If going by your score, you stand a better chance of gaining admission in a polytechnic, by all means, go for it. Unless of course, you don’t mind patronizing JAMB next year.
